I've. Welcome to another hour
of the best of jazz past
00:02:20
and present and conversation with the
music makers on jazz America from v.o.a.
00:02:25
Why this is rest Davis your host I'll
take you to jazz Congress to talk about
00:02:30
a mile.
00:02:38
There are
00:02:38
a few celebrities in the world who can
simply go by one name and you know exactly
00:02:45
who they are share pay lay and
I can go on but when I say
00:02:51
Miles you know who I'm talking
about the man with the horn Miles
00:02:57
Davis made quite
00:02:59
a few changes in his career including
in the sixty's and early seventy's
00:03:03
a turn to more electric
jazz with instead of
00:03:07
a straight swing and beat more of an
even flow sometimes he would just
00:03:14
begin a song with
00:03:16
a rhythm and then just let it flow for
half an hour or longer it was the
00:03:23
electric time of jazz and Miles ushered
it and we're going to hear some
00:03:29
conversation from the jazz Congress the
largest gathering of jazz musicians
00:03:36
promoters and fans in all of the world
each and every year in New York City it
00:03:42
happens right after the 1st of the
year and one of the panels was
00:03:46
a celebration of electric miles revisited
we're going to talk to some of the
00:03:51
artists who are on that panel and hear
some classic electric miles music but 1st
00:03:57
let's hear some music from
00:03:58
a gentleman who. I'm certain has followed
in the footsteps of Miles Davis is
00:04:03
a matter of fact if Miles were around
today he might sound like Willis Wilson
00:04:10
and I mentioned the word flow earlier
that's the title of this song from his new
00:04:15
release conversations that I'll play for
you now to begin this hour of the always
00:04:21

00:14:11
From his expansive new 3 disc release
titled been there done that Ben Sidran
00:14:18
live around the world 975 to 2015
with performances everywhere from
00:14:25
New York to Paris to Madrid Milan 0
Minneapolis London and Tokyo as you just
00:14:32
heard that was recorded live in Tokyo in
1991 that was too hot to touch brand new
00:14:39
music from our stack of new and notable
that one by Ben Sidran Now let's return to
00:14:45
the Jazz Congress in New York City for more
of the conversation that we enjoyed as
00:14:51
we listened in on the words of some of
the artist who worked with Miles Davis
00:14:57
during that very important transitional
time when Miles turned electric in the 1960
00:15:04
s.
00:15:04
And seventy's among those folks that worked
with him we'll hear from saxophonist Gary
00:15:10
Bartz who will tell us how he came together
with Miles to join his band and on
00:15:16
which recordings he 1st played with
him I had seen Miles. From the time
00:15:23
I guess I was 15 I went to see the
band with John Coltrane Rigaud in
00:15:30
Philly Joe Jones Paul Chambers
over in Washington d.c.
00:15:33
So I had been following him I started
working with Max Roach and we did
00:15:40
a. Show actually was 10
days we did a week and
00:15:44
a week at Count bases
in. Opposite miles so
00:15:52
you know he's listening to me every night
and that's the 1st time he started
00:15:56
talking to me you know so. Boat. One night
he came down when I was working with
00:16:02
McCoy Tyner down to slow us and he came in
they said I heard I didn't see and they
00:16:09
said monsters here you know and I went to
go see him and he had left already and it
00:16:14
following week he called me and
he said Gary this is my house
00:16:21
so he asked me to do in
00:16:23
a band and that's how I do it bad it was
your 1st record you were actually you know
00:16:29
I never went in the studio with
us. For some reason he felt that
00:16:36
band the band I was in with him was
00:16:38
a more organic kind of band that we
would do shows and him with 2 and 2 and
00:16:43
a half hour long shows you know and we you
know we went in the studio wouldn't be
00:16:50
you know we'd be in day and so I
think the 1st record. They released
00:16:56
was Live Evil and that was part of the.
00:17:04
What was the club in Washington d.c.
00:17:07
Summer doing yeah we did the summer tour
and so they took some of the excerpts from
00:17:12
that and then they released
all of that and that was
00:17:17
a funny album because. George I
mean John McLaughlin was on the
00:17:24
record Live Evil but we did had done
00:17:27
a week. At the cellar door
without John and then John
00:17:34
came in and surprised
with the band and it was
00:17:37
a prize to me anyway I didn't know he was
coming and joined a band so that added
00:17:42
a little something different you know.
Which was interesting but that was that
00:17:49
was the 1st records I did.
00:21:07
And. Gary from saxophone and John
00:21:13
McLaughlin on guitar and
00:21:15
a host of other greats jazz of that
day from the 1971 release Live Evil
00:21:22
recorded live in Washington d.c.
00:21:24
The cellar door that is Miles Davis
at his electric best with Sivadas
00:21:31
And now from our stack
of new a notable comes
00:21:35
a trombone assist from Miami Florida named
Ruben cub on who creates on his new
00:21:41
album shafted what he calls Latin infused
hard bop Let's hear the song invitation

00:38:30

00:38:44
There are so many wonderful vocalists out
in the world of jazz today and one of
00:38:49
them is Kristen Lee's sergeant from
her album smolder that's her version
00:38:56
of the classic song The Best
Is Yet To Come She's also
00:38:59
a composer wrote some
songs on this album and
00:39:03
a rain. As well and knows how to draw on
some fantastic players to work with her
00:39:07
like Ted Nash who played the saxophone
and flute on this new release Now let's
00:39:13
return to jazz Congress in New York City
to continue our investigation of one of
00:39:19
the panels that was most enjoyable
titled electric miles revisited the time
00:39:26
in the Miles Davis career in the late
sixty's and seventy's when the music became
00:39:31
electric the rhythms changed jazz fusion
was born Thanks to Miles Davis and many of
00:39:37
the great artists who worked with him on
those projects were there for the panel
00:39:42
among them electric bassist Michael
Henderson Michael how did how did miles and
00:39:48
that the music you me after you left
the band Well 1st I started out by
00:39:55
recording you on my starship with Miles
Davis. And I was the 1st what do you mean
00:40:01
with Miles Davis while we cut it in the
studio and I says Well Miles kept saying to
00:40:06
me he says. You want to give me one of those
hit records you do want it but it goes
00:40:12
. And so I said Ok we went
into the studio and did
00:40:19
you know my starship we would cut it.
With Keith Jarrett and Richie Lucas
00:40:26
and the rest are guys 1st it
was Valentine. That's still
00:40:31
a hit after 45 years with
00:40:34
a song with we both did each other with
Miss Phyllis timing and in the next song
00:40:39
was you on my starship and they kept coming
and after that you know hit after hit
00:40:44
after hit after hit or hit and then I started
thinking and so I didn't play as much
00:40:50
bass but it was time to elevate you know
because you know I had done I played jazz
00:40:56
with those of the funk purpose. You
know what in the sixty's we did that
00:41:03
already I mean they did that every night
you know. But I learned from the best
00:41:10
you know I learned from the best
00:41:11
a lot of people don't know it if you will
can he played more than one note I said
00:41:15
you just don't know do you you just don't
know so we need to have this conversation
00:41:21
yes Mr Michael Henderson and now we need
to have this listening session as Michael
00:41:27
Henderson plays electric bass Billy Cobham
on the drums John McLaughlin on guitar
00:41:33
Herbie Hancock on electric keyboards
on trumpet Miles Davis who was
00:41:37
a huge fan of boxing and on the album
00:41:41
a tribute to Jack Johnson paid off to one
of his favorite boxers ever Miles Davis
00:41:48
and company right off on
jazz America from the oh
00:41:52

00:48:06

00:48:18
Led.
00:48:32

to give you the perfect combination
00:56:19
of rock and jazz the songs right off from
00:56:23
a tribute to Jack Johnson Miles Davis and.
I know the next edition of jazz America

go to 1941 and talk with
00:56:38
Duke Ellington Yes we've uncovered our

story talk about jazz in general and his
00:56:50

music makers on jazz America from v.o.a.
00:02:25
Why this is rest Davis your host I'll
take you to jazz Congress to talk about
00:02:30
a mile.
00:02:38
There are
00:02:38
a few celebrities in the world who can
simply go by one name and you know exactly
00:02:45
who they are share pay lay and
I can go on but when I say
00:02:51
Miles you know who I'm talking
about the man with the horn Miles
00:02:57
Davis made quite
00:02:59
a few changes in his career including
in the sixty's and early seventy's
00:03:03
a turn to more electric
jazz with instead of
00:03:07
a straight swing and beat more of an
even flow sometimes he would just
00:03:14
begin a song with
00:03:16
a rhythm and then just let it flow for
half an hour or longer it was the
00:03:23
electric time of jazz and Miles ushered
it and we're going to hear some
00:03:29
conversation from the jazz Congress the
largest gathering of jazz musicians
00:03:36
promoters and fans in all of the world
each and every year in New York City it
00:03:42
happens right after the 1st of the
year and one of the panels was
00:03:46
a celebration of electric miles revisited
we're going to talk to some of the
00:03:51
artists who are on that panel and hear
some classic electric miles music but 1st
00:03:57
let's hear some music from
00:03:58
a gentleman who. I'm certain has followed
in the footsteps of Miles Davis is
00:04:03
a matter of fact if Miles were around
today he might sound like Willis Wilson
00:04:10
and I mentioned the word flow earlier
that's the title of this song from his new
00:04:15
release conversations that I'll play for
you now to begin this hour of the always
00:04:21
jazz America.

00:14:11
From his expansive new 3 disc release
titled been there done that Ben Sidran
00:14:18
live around the world 975 to 2015
with performances everywhere from
00:14:25
New York to Paris to Madrid Milan 0
Minneapolis London and Tokyo as you just
00:14:32
heard that was recorded live in Tokyo in
1991 that was too hot to touch brand new
00:14:39
music from our stack of new and notable
that one by Ben Sidran Now let's return to
00:14:45
the Jazz Congress in New York City for more
of the conversation that we enjoyed as
00:14:51
we listened in on the words of some of
the artist who worked with Miles Davis
00:14:57
during that very important transitional
time when Miles turned electric in the 1960
00:15:04
s.
00:15:04
And seventy's among those folks that worked
with him we'll hear from saxophonist Gary
00:15:10
Bartz who will tell us how he came together
with Miles to join his band and on
00:15:16
which recordings he 1st played with
him I had seen Miles. From the time
00:15:23
I guess I was 15 I went to see the
band with John Coltrane Rigaud in
00:15:30
Philly Joe Jones Paul Chambers
over in Washington d.c.
00:15:33
So I had been following him I started
working with Max Roach and we did
00:15:40
a. Show actually was 10
days we did a week and
00:15:44
a week at Count bases
in. Opposite miles so
00:15:52
you know he's listening to me every night
and that's the 1st time he started
00:15:56
talking to me you know so. Boat. One night
he came down when I was working with
00:16:02
McCoy Tyner down to slow us and he came in
they said I heard I didn't see and they
00:16:09
said monsters here you know and I went to
go see him and he had left already and it
00:16:14
following week he called me and
he said Gary this is my house
00:16:21
so he asked me to do in
00:16:23
a band and that's how I do it bad it was
your 1st record you were actually you know
00:16:29
I never went in the studio with
us. For some reason he felt that
00:16:36
band the band I was in with him was
00:16:38
a more organic kind of band that we
would do shows and him with 2 and 2 and
00:16:43
a half hour long shows you know and we you
know we went in the studio wouldn't be
00:16:50
you know we'd be in day and so I
think the 1st record. They released
00:16:56
was Live Evil and that was part of the.
00:17:04
What was the club in Washington d.c.
00:17:07
Summer doing yeah we did the summer tour
and so they took some of the excerpts from
00:17:12
that and then they released
all of that and that was
00:17:17
a funny album because. George I
mean John McLaughlin was on the
00:17:24
record Live Evil but we did had done
00:17:27
a week. At the cellar door
without John and then John
00:17:34
came in and surprised
with the band and it was
00:17:37
a prize to me anyway I didn't know he was
coming and joined a band so that added
00:17:42
a little something different you know.
Which was interesting but that was that
00:17:49
was the 1st records I did.
00:21:07
And. Gary from saxophone and John
00:21:13
McLaughlin on guitar and
00:21:15
a host of other greats jazz of that
day from the 1971 release Live Evil
00:21:22
recorded live in Washington d.c.
00:21:24
The cellar door that is Miles Davis
at his electric best with Sivadas
00:21:31
And now from our stack
of new a notable comes
00:21:35
a trombone assist from Miami Florida named
Ruben cub on who creates on his new
00:21:41
album shafted what he calls Latin infused
hard bop Let's hear the song invitation

00:38:44
There are so many wonderful vocalists out
in the world of jazz today and one of
00:38:49
them is Kristen Lee's sergeant from
her album smolder that's her version
00:38:56
of the classic song The Best
Is Yet To Come She's also
00:38:59
a composer wrote some
songs on this album and
00:39:03
a rain. As well and knows how to draw on
some fantastic players to work with her
00:39:07
like Ted Nash who played the saxophone
and flute on this new release Now let's
00:39:13
return to jazz Congress in New York City
to continue our investigation of one of
00:39:19
the panels that was most enjoyable
titled electric miles revisited the time
00:39:26
in the Miles Davis career in the late
sixty's and seventy's when the music became
00:39:31
electric the rhythms changed jazz fusion
was born Thanks to Miles Davis and many of
00:39:37
the great artists who worked with him on
those projects were there for the panel
00:39:42
among them electric bassist Michael
Henderson Michael how did how did miles and
00:39:48
that the music you me after you left
the band Well 1st I started out by
00:39:55
recording you on my starship with Miles
Davis. And I was the 1st what do you mean
00:40:01
with Miles Davis while we cut it in the
studio and I says Well Miles kept saying to
00:40:06
me he says. You want to give me one of those
hit records you do want it but it goes
00:40:12
. And so I said Ok we went
into the studio and did
00:40:19
you know my starship we would cut it.
With Keith Jarrett and Richie Lucas
00:40:26
and the rest are guys 1st it
was Valentine. That's still
00:40:31
a hit after 45 years with
00:40:34
a song with we both did each other with
Miss Phyllis timing and in the next song
00:40:39
was you on my starship and they kept coming
and after that you know hit after hit
00:40:44
after hit after hit or hit and then I started
thinking and so I didn't play as much
00:40:50
bass but it was time to elevate you know
because you know I had done I played jazz
00:40:56
with those of the funk purpose. You
know what in the sixty's we did that
00:41:03
already I mean they did that every night
you know. But I learned from the best
00:41:10
you know I learned from the best
00:41:11
a lot of people don't know it if you will
can he played more than one note I said
00:41:15
you just don't know do you you just don't
know so we need to have this conversation
00:41:21
yes Mr Michael Henderson and now we need
to have this listening session as Michael
00:41:27
Henderson plays electric bass Billy Cobham
on the drums John McLaughlin on guitar
00:41:33
Herbie Hancock on electric keyboards
on trumpet Miles Davis who was
00:41:37
a huge fan of boxing and on the album
00:41:41
a tribute to Jack Johnson paid off to one
of his favorite boxers ever Miles Davis
00:41:48
and company right off on
jazz America from the oh
